wwwpic5678 MANCHESTER CITY’s season will feel “ordinary” if they don’t progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

That’s the outlandish claim from Jermaine Jenas - who believes the Premier League champions elect will be flattened should they fail to overturn their 3-0 first-leg deficit against Liverpool in Europe this evening (7.45pm).

City suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Reds at Anfield last week to hugely dent their chances of progressing to the last four for just the second time in the club’s history.

And they followed that up by wasting a chance to secure the league title against enemies Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's side led 2-0 at half-time but went on to suffer just their second top-flight defeat of the season to deny them the chance of wrapping up the league with six games to spare.

While Liverpool are the favourites in their continental clash - scoring once tonight would leave City needing five goals to go through - former Premier League midfielder Jenas wwwpic5678 believes the onus is on the hosts given how superior they have been domestically this season.

He declared: “We have expected so much from Guardiola's side that if it turns out they go out of the Champions League and only win the Premier League and Carabao Cup, then what might have been an outstanding season will feel like an ordinary one, despite what they have achieved.

“I just expected this team to at least get to the semi-finals of the Champions League and it is certainly not going to sit well with their manager if they fall short.

“On the other hand, if they do find a way to get past Liverpool then it will be by doing something spectacular that will ignite their season again.”

And with Vincent Kompany having started both of their last two matches, Jenas believes the City skipper could be benched here by Guardiola despite the magnitude of the game.

That’s because he expects the Catalan to go all-out attack as the Sky Blues chase a historic comeback - with even their centre-back partnership to be tasked with taking City forward.

Jenas told BBC Sport: “Guardiola has to put out a side that fits the task they face, which is why I am expecting him to go for it with the type of team he sets up, right from the back.

“It would not surprise me to see John Stones and Aymeric Laporte together at centre-half to bring the ball out, and Fabian Delph at left-back and Kyle Walker on the right both getting forward too.

“Yes, they will be open to counter-attacks but they have no choice.” wwwpic5678
